Do you like questions?
I am definitely a question-asker! Are you?
I have loved questions since I was little because they are a great way to learn and explore the world!
When I was in seminary in Texas, I took a class called Principles of Teaching. For one assignment, I was put into a group with three other students and told to give a presentation in front of the class about how to use questions when teaching.
Jesus was our Master example for this assignment, since He used questions a lot! He used them not only to inquire about something, but also to teach people lessons.
For example:
"Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?" -Matthew 6:27
"If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?" -Luke 6:32
"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?" -Matthew 7:3
"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?" The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise." -Luke 10:36-37
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” “The son of David,” they replied. He said to them, [in Psalm 110:1] “How is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’? For he says, ‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I put your enemies under your feet.” ' If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how can he be his son?” No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions. -Matthew 22:41-46
I love that Jesus didn't always answer his own questions, since He was using them as tools to teach specific lessons.
Have you ever thought about asking questions to get non-Christians to think about God?
For example:
- Do you ever wonder why you're here on earth?
- What is your purpose in life?
- If there's a chance God exists, would you want to know about it?
- Do you believe that you're going to heaven? (- If so, why? - If not, did you know that there is a way to get there? (through Jesus))
- Do you ever pray? (- If so, who do you pray to? - If not, where to you go when you need help?)
Questions can be used to direct people towards God.
Questions can take a mundane conversation and cause it to become much more purposeful!
